One week ago, Houston then Trudeau set a stress fire under the people they are
supposed to represent. People for whom they are supposed to negotiate, to
enhance their citizens prosperity, health and freedom.
Instead of doing that, each of
these politicians used language of retaliation, putting the response in our
hands last weekend, against our American neighbours, to whom we bear no ill
will. Creating division among us again, reminiscent of the 2020/2021 mandate
disaster template.
This is not good leadership. What
stress and reduction of productivity, and effect on provincial economy did this
cause in Nova Scotians on Sunday and Monday, that we cannot calculate?
As of now, even with the serious
tariff issue pushed out, some people’s responses are cancelling Disney Channel
memberships, looking for different places to buy dog food, and trying not to
buy anything from American business people. Tactics were used to make us focus
on the wrong thing, retaliating against individuals like us, instead of looking
for the leadership set this issue right.
One good thing to come from this
tariff turmoil is the renewed interest this week in Nova Scotians buying local
goods. However, this is too little too late for many. We remember the local
businesses who were required to close in 2020 while corporations like Walmart
and Home Depot could remain open. Why? Some local businesses never re-opened,
and some struggled then closed in the years after. It made no sense. They are
gone, not here to experience the renewed interest in buying from them.
The incessant strikes taken against
Nova Scotians are too numerous to mention here, and you are more aware of them
than most, anyway. Poor healthcare, unpredictable and inexplicably high
property taxes, with low return for our tax dollar, are just a few.
But, we must do what we can, where
we can, where we are, with this reality.
Here in Nova Scotia, Canada.
What’s happening this week:
On January 7/25, a Federal Court
challenge to the decision to prorogue Parliament was filed by two Nova
Scotians. David MacKinnon and Aris Lavranos MD, JD filed this challenge, and
are represented by lawyers from the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms.
You can listen to JCCF lawyer James
Manson and Aris Lavranos here, in a January 2025 interview on the topic on Alex Pierson's radio show. It’s quite interesting to listen to
their points now, after what happened last week. The hearing is this Thursday February 13/25 and Friday February 14/25
in Ottawa.
Wins for Nova Scotia normalcy:
We are most proud of our work
helping those that help themselves.
Last year, applying students made
the NSCLA aware of universities in our province that were requiring the
so-called Primary Series of Covid Vaccination for some programs. In 2024! This, in spite of the Nova Scotia Health Authority
Amendment to the policy on February 21/24, removing this requirement.
We were pleased to support the
students and communicate with the universities to remind them to check outdated
documentation regarding this vaccination mandate. The outcome of working
together:
These universities appropriately
removed this requirement in their student applications.
Our small NSCLA team is all volunteers, with busy lives. We mostly spend our time here in research and working together in discussion, and in legal action where necessary, to help Nova Scotians. Like any worthwhile venture, there are costs to function. We appreciate it when you help by forwarding our emails to other aware people you know, and making a donation if that is something you can do.
