The
Nova Scotia Civil Liberties Association (NSCLA) is surprised and
disappointed by the complete lack of defence from our MLAs and MPs
regarding the cancellations of Sean Feucht’s Christian events. These
cancellations represent multiple breaches of freedoms outlined in the
Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The only statements made were
weak, opposing religious freedom and supporting censorship.
- Breach of Equality Rights: Specifically, Christians were prevented from participating in a scheduled event due to their religion.
- Breach of Fundamental Freedoms: The government violated all of the following:
Freedom of conscience
Freedom of religion
Freedom of thought
Freedom of belief
Freedom of opinion
Freedom of expression
Freedom of peaceful assembly
Freedom of association
We urge MLAs who made these statements to review their remarks, retract them, and remember the constituents they represent and the freedoms they are sworn to uphold. For representatives who remained silent, which appears as tacit approval of these breaches, we ask that they publicly reaffirm their commitment to defending these freedoms.
Determined to find Canadian representatives who spoke out appropriately and promptly, we looked beyond Nova Scotia. We express our appreciation to Andrew Lawton, MP, Roman Baber, MP, and Michael Barrett, MP. We quote MP Roman Baber on a critical point: “Freedom of speech and freedom of expression are the most precious rights, as through expression we defend all other rights.”
Please do the right thing. Many Nova Scotians are counting on you.
